Rory's Arm Hurts

We’re stomping through the street on a mission
I don’t know what sort of a mission
possibly on the hunt for Christmas decorations
— Operation Decoration
find some sparkly stuff
and then traipse back to the bus shack
to hitch a lift home

and we’re by the big tower huge tower
‘skyscraper’ they call it
— scrapes the sky
like some massive concrete fingernail
and I notice Rory is holding his arm
huffing
clutching his elbow and huffing
“Oo.” he says
“Oo.”

Puzzled, I ask, “What’s up bud?”
and he squints his eyes up at the skies
and he goes “I hurt my arm.”

“Well, how did you do that?” I ask
“Counting the clouds.” he says

“Counting the clouds?”
“COUNTING THE CLOUDS.”

“Did you? Did you really?” I ask

“There’s eight clouds.” he says

“one two three four six seven eight”

“That’s only seven.” says his sister
“You’ve counted them wrong.”
“No I haven’t.”
“Yes you have.”
“No… I haven’t, Ruby.”
“Yes you have, Rory. Where’s five?” she says.

“It’s gone.” he says

“There was one two three four five six seven eight
and then it went
and now there’s one two three four six seven eight.”

We all squint our eyes at the skies
his arm aching
our heads aching
then, creeping out from behind the skyscraper
pops another cloud

“Oh! HALLO FIVE!” he yells.

The Christmas Bear

The Christmas Bear

And everyone said
to the big Christmas Bear
with his wrinkly face
and his floppy brown hair

“Bear, why do you shout
at the plants and the trees
and yell through the wind
as it carries the freeze?”

The Christmas Bear frowned
at his friends in the grove
and ruffled his nose
to the owl and the toad

Picture
“What do you mean?” He said
“What do you say?”
“Why do you ask this in your curious way?”

The two little friends
blinked and blunked and
thinked and thunked and
scrinkled and scrunked and both replied

“Bear, why do you shout
at the plants and the trees
and yell through the wind
as it carries the freeze?

Why do you bellow
as the ice melts away
and do your bear dance
as the night fades to day?”

He scratched his fat head
and tickled his nose and
began, “I suppose…
I suppose… I suppose…

It is — you see — to wake them all up
to wake up the trees
and the plants and the bugs
to bring them all back
now the winter is sung
and the leaves are beginning
to become all unsprung.”

The toad and the owl
tilted heads to the side
and tried, how they tried
to open up their minds

“But, why do YOU shout
at the plants and the trees
and why do YOU yell
through the wind
as it carries the freeze?
Why do YOU bellow
as the ice melts away
and do YOUR bear dance
as the night fades to day?”

The Christmas Bear shrugged
with his flappy old hands
hoping his words would
help them both understand

“Someone’s got to, haven’t they?
Might as well be me!”
